The monthly magazine "Compact - Magazine for Sovereignty" is chief edited by Jürgen Elsässer. It is a "Querfront" magazine - meaning that its aim is to unite far left and far right actors through shared tropes - and has been seen as a mouthpiece of the AfD party and also Pegida. The "Querfront" strategy goes back to the 1920s where e.g. the then chancellor Kurt von Schleicher tried to unite all anti-democratic forces against the Weimar Republic in order to form a union across the left and right.

Working mode, goals

Besides the print journal and the website, Compact also has a Youtube channel called Compact-TV, moderated by Katrin Ziske. The magazine has a print run of 85.000. The magazine is very close to the right wing of the AfD, i.e. its East German members. For example, Andre Poggenburg of AfD Sachsen-Anhalt gave interviews only to Compact after the Land elections there. Elsässer refers to the AfD as the party of the "silent majority" and describes Commpact as the voice of the silent majority. Compact sees all other media as "Lügenpresse", the lying media.
