It is the organizationally independent political party foundation, institution of political education and with their Green Academy Think Tank of the party "Alliance '90 / The Greens".
It was formed by the merger of three separate green foundation projects, the foundations Buntstift (Göttingen), Frauenanstiftung (Hamburg) and Heinrich Böll Foundation (Cologne) each a member of the green Stiftungsverband Regenbogen

The HBS is a association with currently 49 members, a supervisory board of nine, a steering committee of two and a executive secretariat of four.
