Collet initiated the founding of the Centre for Political Studies (CEPOS) and is chairman of the executive board.

From 1968 until 1971 Collet worked for General Mills. General Mills is currently the 6th largest food company worldwide. In 1968 Collet acquired the country estate "Lundbygaard Gods", which encompasses more than 1000 ha and turned it into biggest Europe's largest fir tree producer. From the 1980s onward Collet has filled crucial positions in agricultural associations, educational centers, in companies in the financial industry and in academic societies.
From 1998 until 2005 Collet chaired the organization Civil Economists" (now C3 - Management and Economics die dänische Interessenvereinigung von im Bereich des Managements, der Managementausbildung und -wissenschaft Tätigen. Gleichfalls von 1998 bis 2005 Verwaltungsratsmitglied des Dachverbands der dänischen akademischen Fachorganisationen, wie auch Präsident von CIADEC (International Confederation of Associations of Graduates in Economic and Commercial Sciences) und der Nordischen Ökonomenvereinigung (Nordic Civiløkonom Federal).
Er war von 1981 bis 1990 Mitglied des dänischen Parlaments Folketing für die konservative Partei und Verteidigungsminis in der Regierung Poul Schlüter 1987/88.
